This Christmas season, I have had the blessing of a great set of products, apps and videos to review. It seems like every single on that I have received, my family and I have absolutely loved. Perfect for the season. I honestly don’t give them a favorable review unless either I enjoyed it, or my kids enjoyed it. Today the snow fell heavy so it was perfect night to light a fire and put in todays DVD to review. Tonight we watched “The Promise.”
I said all of that in the first paragraph so I could be really honest in this one. This DVD was just okay. While the subject, content, artwork and story were all good, the music was a little much. Maybe it was the cover of the DVD, but I think our expectation was that this was a kids DVD musical. It was a musical and it’s not that the content wasn’t kid friendly, the singing was more opera style than we had anticipated. So, if the expectation is set appropriately before you start the film, it might be better received.
At one point one of my daughters said “this is like Les Mis.” Again, I think she was referring to the music more than the production or story. So, if you approach the DVD with that in mind, this is a good story with great artwork. Here’s a trailer that might give some better idea:
